Frenzy Charge Generation
My flicker strike build relies entirely on frenzy charge generation on hit. This works smoothly: you don't need Farrul's for Flicker Strike, as some people have come to think - you didn't need it before it was introduced either.
This has always worked - watching any of my gameplay would show you that it does - but if you need proof, here's mathematical proof.
The chance per hit
The only scenario that actually matters is against a single unique enemy, usually a map boss.
- 35% from 20% quality Flicker Strike + 10% green socket quality
- 10% from hits against a marked enemy (Mark Mastery)
- 8% from hits against a unique enemy (Sword Mastery)
That makes the chance to gain a frenzy charge on hitting a marked unique enemy 53%.
Against packs, you have additional strike targets (99.99% on hit chance with 3 total targets), 8% on kill and 20% on block on top of the regular on hit generation.
The chance per Flicker Strike
Each use of Flicker Strike expends a frenzy charge and hits several times. With hits, the chance that at least one of them grants a charge is one minus the chance that none of them does and you go down one frenzy charge:
You hit 3 times per expended frenzy charge with regular Multistrike, 4 times with Greater Multistrike:
About nine in ten Flicker Strikes give the charge back.
You can gain at most one frenzy charge per Flicker Strike, so there's a small chance to lose some over time. That's offset by the free uses you occasionally get - when the cooldown is up, Flicker Strike doesn't need a charge - as well as by every other source that also grants charges, like blocking and killing; those aren't tied to the limit of one charge gained per skill use.
Warrior's Legacy and Echoing
Once you have Warrior's Legacy, the skill repeats once more, doubling your strikes effectively, which is where it gets really comfortable - comfortable enough to drop the 8% from hitting unique enemies (), or even both masteries ():
hits per Flicker Strike.
Bosses
Whenever you fight a boss you spawn right next to, without trash mobs beforehand to build charges on, use Frenzy of Onslaught to get your charges up, then Flicker Strike. Alternatively, swap to an off-hand shield with +2 or +3 (implicit corrupted shield) minimum Frenzy Charges and back: that gives you the 2 charges as charges you can expend with your main weapon set.
Keep in mind that Frenzy of Onslaught removes your charges when you use it too much. The base version no longer works with Swords; you need the alternate version.
Before you have Greater Multistrike or Warrior's Legacy, you may sometimes run low on charges. Top them up with Frenzy of Onslaught then - I usually do at around 5 of 8 charges - but it almost never happens, and only against a single target.
